Kobe hails Yao – NBA

Subscribe ow.ly | Facebook ow.ly | Twitter ow.ly NBA star Kobe Bryant paid tribute to his Chinese counterpart Yao Ming a day ahead of Yao possibly announcing his retirement from the sport. The former Houston Rockets centre is China’s most recognisable athlete. He’s set to officially announce his retirement during a news conference on Wednesday The seven-foot six-inch eight-time All-Star, has been plagued by numerous injuries in recent years. Yao missed the entire 2009-10 NBA season after suffering a fractured bone in his left foot. He then played just five games for the Rockets last season before being sidelined with an ankle injury. Bryant who was in China to promote the sport, praised Yao’s role in inspiring young Chinese basketball players. “In terms of opening up doors or for Chinese basketball players to come to the NBA or for the youth here in China to believe that it’s possible to achieve the dream of being an NBA player – all that started from Yao.” The 30-year-old has sparked a big interest in basketball in China when he was selected first overall by Houston in the 2002 draft, Despite his injury problems later in his career Bryant is confident that he wouldn’t be the last Chinese player to make an impact in the NBA. “So yeah, they (China) already have players who are very good.
